Bolsonaro led a controversial election campaign and has also proved a controversial leader during his first year in office.
Among the controversies are the praise of the military dictatorship and critique of democratic institutions. With Bolsonaro’s rise to power, the military has gained new influence in Brazilian politics and prominent seats in government.
Another area of controversy is the environment. 2019 was marked by several environmental tragedies in Brazil, most notably the fires in the Amazon. This made evident the lack of political support and funding for environmental protection and the government’s new development agenda.
Public support for Bolsonaro and his government has steadily declined since he took office. It remains historically low at around 30 percent, yet this support seems to have stabilised and far-right supporters have gained political space. Who are his supporters and who are the actors on Brazil’s far-right?
In this seminar on Brazil under Bolsonaro, we examine current developments in Brazil, focusing on Brazil’s far-right, rising militarisation and environmental degradation. |
