The unit has a particular focus on Danish foreign and security policies, and how ongoing geopolitical and normative shifts, for example, influence the relationship between superpowers and new global actors.

Along with the crisis in the international rule-based order, the developments in the Baltic Sea and in the Arctic are among our key questions. Besides the EU, the UN, NATO and the Nordic cooperation, we also focus on China’s global ambitions and the transatlantic relationship.

Our research combines analysis of current political issues with historical and practice-oriented studies of how states legitimise their foreign policy behaviour to both domestic and international audiences.

Through theoretically informed analyses of the conditions that characterise international patterns of cooperation and conflict, the research attempts to expand and deepen the understanding of continuity and change in the global arena, and how states conduct foreign policy.
