A new migration and refugee crisis?
Although thousands have already drowned in the Mediterranean, more and more boats carrying migrants and refugees are setting out, especially from Tunisia and Libya, bound for Europe. Is this a new refugee and migration crisis like the one that unfolded in 2015, or how should the many complex causes - including poverty, war and conflict - of this increase be understood?
During the first four months of the year, more than 30,000 people have crossed the sea between Africa and Europe. That is more than four times as many as the year before.
Why do so many people decide to risk their lives at sea? What prospects do they have when they arrive in Europe? What has the EU done since 2015 to counter a new migration crisis and how has it worked? How are climate change and migration linked?
