No window of opportunity for European development cooperation
Member state interests stand in the way
A European Think-Tanks Group published in February this year a report on European development cooperation and argued for a substantial strengthening of it. Given the global nature of many challenges to development, this is ideally a sound proposal. However, what are the prospects for strengthening a coherent European approach to development cooperation? In a contribution to the Nordic Africa Development Policy Forum, Lars Engberg-Pedersen argues that there is currently no window of opportunity for promoting a European perspective on development and that the major problem is that lack of political support in the member states.
