China’s growing security role in Africa and the Middle East
New military ties with Djibouti

Earlier this year, China began to construct a new logistical base in Djibouti. The small, but strategically placed country, on the Horn of Africa, already serves as a launching pad for American, French, and Japanese militaries, and will also serve China’s anti-piracy, peacekeeping and humanitarian activities in Africa and the Middle East.
