Between Unity and Fragmentation

New article by Nauja Kleist examines Somali associations in Denmark

In this new article, Nauja Kleist, project senior researcher in the migration unit at DIIS, examines Somali associations in Denmark in a local and transnational perspective. There are at least 50 Somali associations in Denmark, differing in size, scale, type and purpose; from small town social clubs to transnational umbrella organizations with members in different countries.

The article analyses how associational involvement is related to inclusion and exclusion in Danish society and transnationally, as well as processes of unity and fragmentation in the Somali group. On the one hand, the high number of Somali associations shows initiative, efforts to further integration and willingness to help other Somalis.

Likewise, they reflect the Danish opportunity structure where associations are supported as a cornerstone in civil society. As many Somalis are not well established in Danish politics or in the labor market, forming or joining an association is an accessible way of participating in Danish society.

On the other hand, the transnational orientation of many Somali associations mirrors the obligations and activities of their members who remain connected to Somalia and Somaliland. Finally, some associations are divided along political, clan and regional lines, reflecting the protracted conflict in Somalia and how it spills over in the diaspora, in this case in Denmark.

The article is published in Italian in the journal Afriche e Orienti as part of a special issue on African associations in Europe, edited by Bruno Riccio.
