The Arab Uprisings: Regional implications and International Responses
Helle Malmvig & Christina Markus Lassen contribute to IEMed yearbook
In the chapter "The Arab Uprisings: Regional Implications and International Responses"in the IEmed Yearbook 2013, Helle Malmvig and Christina Markus Lassen argue that the emerging political and strategic landscape in the Middle East is more open-ended and more contradictory than the simplistic “Arab Spring-Arab Winter” metaphor may lead us to believe. Secondly, Malmvig & Lassen contend that the EU and the US have had difficulties responding to these contradictory developments, partly due to internal political and economic problems, and also because of a reluctance to interfere in home-grown revolutions, thereby leaving the field open to competing regional and international players, in particular in the Gulf.
