Migration in response to poverty, natural disasters or conflict is rooted in inequality that is further reproduced in transit and destination countries. The policies designed to contain migration in countries of origin go hand in hand with the creation of legal limbos under which people fleeing conflict and natural disasters are classified as irregular migrants and kept from applying for protection. Thus, not only destination and transit, but also sending countries are complicit in this policy development.
