DIIS forsker i forholdet mellem stater, internationale relationer og samarbejde. I fokus er forskellen mellem småstaters og stormagters udenrigspolitik, hvordan politikere er styret af fortidens udenrigspolitik og EU's udenrigspolitik, og diplomati i internationale organisationer.
